Here Comes The (Skinny!) Bride

Nothing lit a fire under my ass to lose weight until the 6 month mark to our wedding arrived.  I went from being 130 pounds to a solid 215 pounds in just 1 year.  I had gone from a size 4 to a 14 in that time &  I still had a hard, if not impossible, time believing the size I was. I'm 5'9 so I did have more room to spread the weight but it was taking a toll on my body.  I'm not embarrassed to admit my weight- I'd be more embarrassed to admit I did nothing about it. At first, I was constantly squeezing myself into clothes too small because that's what I was used to and I couldn't admit how much I had 'let myself go.'  I stopped going out as much as I used to because I felt I looked terrible, to me I was almost unrecognizable.  I started wearing my fiances over sized shirts and gym shorts because I didn't have any clothes that fit.  And, if I dared, I probably could have parked in the 'Expectant Mother' parking space.  Yet, I did nothing about my weight until March 1, 2012- 6 months on the dot to our September 1 wedding.

Let me be quite clear- I'm losing the weight because I WANT TO. Losing weight will not work if you're doing it for someone else.  You have to be motivated, focused and willing to work for it.  It will be hard to get motivated (it was for me for the longest time) because you just feel so bad about the way you look and the fact you let yourself get that way. To be quite honest, I never want to look back at our wedding pictures and think 'wow, who is that cookie monster in the white dress.'  Fearing that might happen, the motivation came easier than I thought.  I want to FEEL as beautiful and perfect as possible when I walk down the aisle, damnit!  And I capitalize feel because weight loss is all about how you feel.  If you only lose 10 pounds but feel fantastic about how you look and the progress you've made, then that's what matters most.  I decided I wanted my goal weight loss to be about 60 pounds which was about 10 pounds a month or about 2 and a half pounds a week (a healthy weight loss and a very manageable one with hard work). So far, I've exceeded my goal as I've lost an average of 5 pounds a week.  So, now that I've taken my weight loss seriously and have seen results, we're ready for the good part: what I've done to lose 15 pounds in 3 weeks!

My first piece of advice (and I'm not a doctor, nurse, dietitian, etc.  I'm simply a girl who wants to feel good in my wedding dress.) is don't make your weight loss goals unattainable.  You will be so disappointed if you expected to lose 30 lbs in a month and didn't.  It's not worth the disappointment.

Another thing I did that has kept me so motivated and inspired to work out is make a weight loss goal and reward chart.  Here's an example of mine:

The more weight that is lost, the more expensive or desired of a reward!  I think it's important to reward yourself in some way.  It is hard work to stay committed to a life change with working out and eating healthy consistently. That should be celebrated and rewarded!  It also gives you motivation.. I'm working so hard for that half hour massage! Sometimes when I'm working out and get tired and want to stop, I think of this chart and keep going so I can reach my reward!

Now, I hate working out. HATE IT. Being hot, sweaty, and achy is not my thing.  But I couldn't expect to lose as much weight as I wanted without working out so I decided to take up swimming.. again.  I was on the swim team in high school but the thought of swimming again 5 years after I hadn't been near a pool made me nearly faint.  I assumed I would drown on my first attempt back in the pool, but it went surprisingly well.  If you don't consider yourself a swimmer, I urge you to still at least try.  To me, swimming feels amazing- you're knees and feet don't ache from pounding on the treadmill and you're not all hot and sweaty after.  I can really feel all my muscles working when I swim.  If you absolutely think you cannot swim, start with kick sets.  These will work your legs and abs almost effortlessly and you don't have to worry about having your face in the water, moving your arms or trying to breathe during the stroke.  I swim about an hour and a half, 5 or 6 days a week.  I used to think swimming was rather boring... until I discovered a Waterproof MP3 player!  <-- click the hi-lighted text to take you to Amazon to buy the product for $59.95!  My opinion of the product?  It's great! I really don't think I'll be able to swim without it anymore.  I think swimming is easier with it since it's not as boring.  The volume can actually get to be pretty loud and it was easy to load music onto: no CDs or software to install- I just dragged and dropped songs from itunes to the JLAB folder and that's it! If something makes working out easier for you, then I say it's worth every penny!

You've probably heard a million times: breakfast is the most important part of the day.  Well, I used to think sleep was more important and I was never up for breakfast or in a mood to make breakfast.  Do yourself a favor and START EATING BREAKFAST!  Since I've always heard it's so important I made it a habit to start getting up and eating breakfast.  I usually drink a healthy fruit smoothie made with Almond Milk or cereal with Almond Milk.  I can't say I know for sure my new routine of eating breakfast has helped with my weight loss but I can say I feel so much better after eating breakfast.  I do feel more awake and focused.  Give it a try and see how you feel!

My next tip is make your goals visible:  put your weight loss and reward chart on the fridge so when you're tempted to go for that bowl of ice cream, you'll most likely think twice about it.

Schedule your work outs.  I'm a college student and I work 30+ hours a week (as a nanny so I'm always tired!) so most nights I just want to go home and veg out.  But, being a type A personality girl I am obsessed with planning so, if I have planned to work out and cut out a time for it, I do it.  I almost feel guilty if I've planned it and don't do it.  And, if you can spend an hour between Pinterest and Facebook you can certainly go for a brisk walk or bike ride.  Here's what a typical day is for me:

And why in the heck do I schedule my wake up time?! So I have an idea of how much time I have before I really 'start' my day.. and so I don't roll out of bed and skip that all important breakfast ;)  It might have something to do with that Type-A thing I mentioned, as well! :)

Don't cut out meals. It's only obvious to think that the easiest way to cut calories is to skip out on a meal. Don't. I use this analogy: imagine a fire burning. In order to keep the fire going you need to add wood every now and then. If you stop adding anything to it, it burns out.  The same with your body- when you add food to it, your body gets reenergized and can work better.  If you withhold nutrition and fuel, your body is going to burn out like the fire.  I will say, I am not a big calorie counter.  I know eating Hardees and McDonalds is not a healthy breakfast.  I prefer to use (what I think is) common sense and knowledge and eat healthy foods like fruit and whole grain and vegetables. Baked chicken over fried, smaller portions, skip the pop, etc. You get the point.

Diet/Workout Journal!  I started keeping a diet and work out log (journal) and it has really helped me realize what foods I'm eating and what I may need to cut out and just how much time I'm devoting to working out.  I keep it in my purse and anytime I eat anything I write it down.  I usually skip dessert too just so I don't have to write it down. I may want a double chocolate brownie at the time but when I write that down and read it later, I realize I could have down without those extra calories.  You'd be surprised at how much you probably snack and munch on junk food throughout the day without even realizing it.  A journal would make you realize and cut back (in my experience).

My final piece of advice for this post is just because you've worked out doesn't mean you can then eat a bunch of junk food afterwards.  You're not a dog- don't reward yourself with food.  Don't ruin your great workout!! Trust me, you'll regret it after you do!

I said before I've lost 15 pounds in about 3 weeks so I was compelled to write this post as an effort to help anyone trying to lose any amount of weight.  I know it's hard, I know it's not instant, and I know it's really an entire lifestyle change, but it can be done!  I'll be posting before and after pics as I progress so stay tuned for those and feel free to share any of your helpful weight loss tips!

I just turned 40, 5'1" weighing 196. lbs :( I had just lost 40lbs a year and half ago and had to have a histerectomy which messed up my thyroid (which doctors have not yet regulated it)... And now here I am a year later at 196lbs. DEPRESSING...

Amanda - I don't usually follow blogs, but OMG girl.. You have given me hope and WILL continue to follow your Journey! And join you in it :) You both ladies have really inspired me. Thanks!

    4. DaniLovesScott,
Remember that often times women who lose weight quickly regain it quickly. Especially for those of us who have struggled with eating disorders in the past (yes...my hand is raised). Losing 40 pounds in 2 months is an AMAZING feat, but if your body has a tendency to put it back on the day you stop exercising, it is likely because its in extreme deficit. Dieting is essentially depriving your body from calories, a milder version of an eating disorder. And if you lose weight too quickly, it begins to react the way it would if you HAD an eating disorder.

Don't be discouraged about gaining weight back from 3 years ago. You've done it before, you can do it again...but I'd encourage you to DO IT SLOWLY. As much as we want to shed those pounds, its difficult for your body to effectively lose more than 3 lbs/ week without going into shock. So instead of losing 20/month you would lose 12. But are preparing your body to keep it off forever!!! You go Girl.

    1. Agreed, this was a really good read. As this post touches on, the most important things is to approach your weight loss as a combination of habits that promote an overall healthy LIFESTYLE. Any weight loss plan MUST follow that principle to be truly effective. In fact, check out the following article that does a wonderful job of explaining the key factors in a successful, long-term weight loss strategy: fatfreeme.net/big5

  6. This is great! Really inspirational! I am a college student as well, and I gained a little bit more than the freshman 15. My motivation to loose weight is that I will be studying abroad in Europe this summer and I want to look my best. I started with Weight Watchers and it helped me loose 10 pounds but I have lost the excitement of it and it is not helping me loose weight anymore. I will be reading your blog to help me stay inspired :)

  7. Your blog is fantastic. Most of this is very relatable to me. I'm 22 at my heaviest 160 I'm 5'2" so it really is a noticeable gain from my normal 140. im desiring to be 130. My goal is to be down to that by July 29th because I have my last fitting August 1st for my September 1st wedding LOL! Thank you for your encouragement and ideas. I have committed myself to a journal to track my daily diet and work outs. GOOD LUCK!!!

  14. I found this on Pinterest, and I've found a lot of your fitness quotes and sites inspiring. However, this is truly inspiring for me. I knew you back in high school too, and so I was shocked to see you gain weight, I was always jealous of how tall and skinny and beautiful you were. But you still look great now. Congrats on your weight loss, and your future wedding. I've always been really self conscious about my body, especially because it's nothing like my older sisters. It was a little better because I finally grew so the weight was distributed kind of evenly and didn't look horrible, but it wasn't great. I was anorexic for a little while in high school, and lost about 25 pounds in 2 months. Even then I still didn't feel good about myself. I slowly gained a lot of it back. Being a freshman in college, I fit the stereotype and gained weight again. I play tennis and work out occasionally but not as much as I used to, and that's definitely made a difference. But after seeing this, I know I can accomplish the goals that I set for myself, and I can finally feel better about myself. I too bought a bikini top as inspiration, and I will say it's helping a little. Thank you so much for your inspiration and motivation.

  15. I love this. I'm following all those things and have lost 13 pounds in 5 weeks. I use a great app on my iPod/iPhone - Lose It! (the icon is an orange scale). It is my food and workout journal and I just got my mom using it too. My motivation was that my dad took a picture of my backside in a swimsuit - scary! I also wear a heart rate monitor to track calories burned more accurately.

    1. I do typically swim laps but I've found my arms have been a 'problem' area so I do pulls- which is where I have a pull bouy between my legs to keep my legs afloat but so I also can't kick them. I have to use only my arms to pull myself through the water which I've found REALLY helps since I'm not one to lift weights. My arms often burn after but it's a good burn ;)

  28. I too am on this journey of self discovery as I call it. In March I weighed 274#!!! I'm 5'6" and I was absolutely miserable. I got mononucleosis and it was a blessing in disguise. For some reason I've always needed a catalyst to change and that has been it for me this time. I now weigh 230 on July 11th. When I was sick I didn't eat or drink anything for 6 days and ended up in the hospital with volume depletion. As I began to recover, I took that opportunity to change my eating habits and it has changed everything for me. I try to avoid processed foods, eat lots of fruits and veggies, smaller portions, low fat dairy, and leat meats and fish. If we eat out I only eat 1/2 of my meal if that and take the rest home.

Now, I realize this is not something that began in a healthy way. I am a Registered Nurse and I would never want to see someone to try to become ill on purpose. However, I do recommend that if things happen as they often do and such an opportunity presents itself, take the opportunity to make healthy changes.

My goal is to get down to a size 12-14. I am already down to a 16-18 from a 24. I tend to be a bit on the obsessive/compulsive side so I only weigh occasionally and try not to focus too much on the numbers. I know at what size I have looked my best in the past and that is where I intend to be by the end of the year.

Just wanted to share my story.

    Thanks,

    Nurse Dee.

    1. Thanks so much for your story, Nurse Dee! It can be so hard to realize the weight we've gain and frustrated and daunting thinking about how to lose it all! I too have switched to a nearly all organic, natural lifestyle. I call it a lifestyle because it really is a change for life instead of a temporary diet or fix.
I weigh myself just once a month to track my month to month progress instead of day to day or week to week. One or two pounds a week would be frustrating to me rather than to see the 7 or 10 pounds lost overall in a month so I'm with you on that!
Best of luck to you! Stay inspired & thanks again for sharing your story!

    2. Hi, Ladies.
I was just reading about your respective journeys today and wondered how they are coming along.

  29. WOW! First off thanks! Our stories couldn’t be any closer if we were twins! I went from 135-201 in a matter of 8 months after a reconstructive knee surgery. That was 2 years ago! And I am still 201. We started a biggest loser 2 weeks ago at work and I do not feel I have lost any weight (I will find out tomorrow). I work 4 jobs 7 days a week. I like you have a excel spread sheet of my day to day life tracked down to the hour for everything from wakening up to showering to going to bed. This was all well and good when I made this a few days before the biggest loser started. I have exactly 2 hours of spare time between 5:00am-7:00am. I thought perfect 2 hours to work out every day! Not so fast! At the same time I made this I wrote out an eating plan to pre makes my food into portion size containers so I can eat every 2 hours from 3:00am when I wake up until 7:00pm when I go to bed. Little did I realize it was going to take me an hour and a half everyday to prep food for my fiancé and I!!!!!! I always see these quotes about “right now someone busier than you is running” and I think to myself HA doubt it on average I work almost 70 hours a week 7 days a week. I have only had 2 days off in over 4 months. I need this weight off I WANT this weight off and your blog has surely motivated and helped me! THANKS!! Ashley Townsend!

  30. My tip/advice for weight loss success is: MyFitnessPal.com I use it as a tool to weight loss. I've lost 34lbs in 5 months and feel better than I ever thought I would! I still have a long way to go on my weight loss journey but I'm so happy. One of my friends introduced it to me and I've been hooked ever since. I'm tiny....24 years old at 4ft 9.5 in tall...and I'm 125lbs....doesnt sound like much but when your this short and a good weight is 95-110 125 is pretty fluffy...especially when a lot of the tummy fat is settling in my not yet tightened back post baby belly (and when I say post baby I REALLY mean post baby...she's turning 4 and i still haven't gotten around to working my gut out). I am SO glad you said swim....my husband and I are prior military...we get YMCA access for free....looks like I know where I'm going for my workouts...I used to lifeguard....I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Swimming!!! I will totally have to invest in that water safe mp3 player though and the goal rewards chart (mine will have to be inches and muscle mass since I dont want to be just skinny ya know?) and self scheduling is such a great idea!

  34. Love this blog and this post! Although I don't have a wedding to get ready for I do have a vacation!

I lost 27 lbs last year only to gain that back and then some. I'm now up to 217 my heaviest EVER!

I'm going to start working on losing again. Wish me luck!

  35. I just read your blog for the first time, and it is soooo inspirational. I'm at my heaviest right now, and was like you and athlete in HS. I am miserable with how I look and am ready for a change. I started my fit foods 21 day challenge today and am on day 16 without soft drinks. I hope to follow your blog even more once I'm off for recipe and work out ideas. i am so excited, and congrats on the change! it must feel great. i hope i am as successful as you!

  36. One way to lose weight is to eliminate sugar and processed foods from your diet. Processed foods have no nutritional value, basically when processed foods are consumed they break down into mostly sugar, and sugar will turn into fat if the body does not burn it off.

I lost 54 pounds by detoxing my diet, once you start eliminating processed foods it changes the way you eat and feel about food. You no longer crave junk and chemically processed foods it is a lifestyle change. I stayed on track by planning healthy meals that are processed free, and I kept track of the calories I was consuming with a weight loss goal sheet. I was able to plan in advance my diet and exercise routine and it helped me to stay on track and also to see what my biggest challenges were.

It worked I feel good and I can finally fit back into my cloths.

  37. I am so glad I came across your blog! Just last month, on a vacation, I realized that I truly enjoy swimming. So, when I got home, I started swimming for about an hour and a half nearly every day. I'm 32, 5'1", and 210 lbs. I was always extremely fit growing up, I ran, I was in marching band. Then I developed PCOS when I was 18, I put on weight, and I became kind of lethargic and lazy. I've tried getting back into the workout scene, but never stuck with it. Now that I've discovered this new obsession for swimming, I feel confident I can stick with it. I always feel amazing after, and when I don't get to swim (like now, as I'm recovering from hand surgery), I feel antsy. Thanks for blogging! I know it's possible to achieve my goals, but it helps to read from someone who's going through some of the same stuff!

  38. Like many other people who are following you, I first found you through Pinterest. I read the caption and thought, "yeah right.", but clicked on the link anyways. I am so glad I did!
I am 34, 5'7.5 and at this point in my life, pushing a size 16 (I just had to buy new jeans last week). From childhood and all through high school I was a swimmer. At one point I was on 3 teams at once. I LOVED swimming, it was my life. Then high school ended, swimming ended and for a long time my metabolism continued... That was until life continued, marriage, divorce, jobs, stress, etc. etc. In a nut shell I lost myself, one day looking in the mirror and realizing I was no longer a cute size 6 who could catch the attention of any guy in the room. That isn't my definer, and it isn't my motivation, but it WAS an eye opener.
Over the years I have tried "working out" and even laps again, but was both bored out of my mind and grossed out by sweating.
But when I read your blog and learned of a cool little gadget like a waterproof mp3 player.. I mean, how can music NOT make anything better?? I bought one within minutes of reading your blog. I also bought a new suit (one that fits) and a bouey (I love pulling, always did).
Thank you for your blog! I have been talking myself into getting into the pool for a little over a week and a half, and today I will go from "I'm just too busy (doing absolutely nothing)" to "Today is my first day in the pool!!!!"
Thank you again for your blog, photo encouragement, and motivation! They have re-inspired me to get ME back!
Please post more "after" pics, maybe a few in your wedding dress!?
Thank you and congrats on your marriage!!

  39. This is great! I was just wondering what is your swim routine? I am a college student as well but I haven't swam since middle school and would love to start up. How much did you usually swim a day?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow, thank you for posting this! I am in the process of starting to workout again after what seems like forever! I used to weigh 180lbs in JR high, but lost it all until I was 140lbs in High school. Sadly though, I've gained almost all of it back since I started college and got married. You're post was super inspirational! I've been going to Zumba all week, so it's nice to have a little more motivation not to give up. Thank you and good luck! I know how important it is to want to feel like a queen on your big day, and I'm sure no matter what, you will be a gorgeous bride :)

  41. Saw this and had to immediately come up with a rewards list too! I also made a weight goal chart like you did so I can mark off progress. What an awesome idea! I hope I'm able to stick with healthy habits and lose some weight. I'm tired of being unhealthy, tired and depressed.

  42. 43. Hi Amanda :)

Just saw this off pinterest and added a whole bunch of things to my wish list for swimming :) It's my birthday...and I plan to motivate myself to deserving all of it by swimming every day I can (minus thanksgiving) from now until the end of the month! Where hopefully, my hubby will have grabbed me a few of the things off my wish list. Thank you for the info on the audio headphones.

I wanted to ask you - what was your swimming routine? What did you start at, or did you use a program that set you up? What exactly did you do. It would be wonderful to know!

I'm going on a graduation trip with 200 other students (I'm 18) to Marmaris next summer and I will be wearing a bikini (we're talking about 47'C!) so I guess that is my wedding dress in this case. Thank you so much for all the tips and motivation, I'm going to reach my goals as I watch your progress and get motivated :)
    Best of luck!

  46. I'm 5'9 and 170. I started this "workout" stuff when I was at 192. I'm slowly but surely getting there tho. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this blog entry! My goal is 150, though to be honest- I would be happy with 160. My weight gain happened over 3 years...went from 134 to 197. I couldn't believe it.

I started eating better/portioning. I started logging my food (with myfitnesspal). I have started Zumba twice a week. I love the idea of swimming. I love to swim, though I hate swimsuits.

    Thanks again!

  48. I have ALWAYS struggled with my weight but had lost about 50 lbs 4 years ago but gained that and then some through the course of a rather toxic relationship. Where I am okay with being a bigger girl...I'm not okay with being unhealthy. I have no big grand idea that I could be a size 4 but your story serves as inspiration and I cannot thank you enough for that!

  49. LOVE, LOVE, LOVEEEE your reward chart!! I made the decision a month ago with my husband that we were gonna get healthier! We have been married 5 years, and in that 5 years I have had two children. (You can imagine how that changes your body! HA!) I'm 5'7 and weighed in at 181! I knew it was time for ME! I wasn't happy with who was staring back at me in the mirror. To a women its really a huge deal how we view ourselves, we are our worst critic, yes, but if we do not feel secure in our bodies, we lose that self confidence so quickly! I have been working out for 30 days now and lost 12lbs! I too am a breakfast hater! lol Took some work to choke down those calories in the beginning but it does make the difference!! I would love to find a swimming pool around here! Not sure if out fitness center has one or not but its a great idea for something different! Your doing SO good girl! I have NO doubt your gonna look smokin' in your wedding dress! I will follow your progress! Feel free to check out my blog too if you would like!!! My body has definitely changed, but I can't seem to get back into a routine. I help other people DAILY with their own weight loss, personal development, mindset shift, etc but for some reason I still have gotten off track! It's been helpful to see someone else working hard as well!

I have fibromyalgia, arthritis, lots of back & knee issues so it's not easy for me to get in to much exercise at once but I'm going to do what I can. I may not loose as much as fast as you but as long as the numbers go down I'll be happy. I have 50-55 lbs I need to loose to get me to the 130-135 I'd be happy with cause it would be a healthy weight for my small 5'2" body, although I would really love to get down to closer to 120-125lb. but with all my health problems & being slightly over 40 with 2 grown kids it's going to be extremely hard to get there but I'm going to do my best. Thanks for the tips I'm going to put them into action starting Wed. & start 2014 out right.

I am currently 5'2 and I weight 210lbs... that is not a healthy weight at all. Growing up there were times when I didn't care what I looked like or what people thought about me but now that I'm a young adult... it matters to me! I am hoping to find a man soon and I want to feel beautiful! I am not doing this because someone told me I needed to... I am doing it for myself. I am doing it to get rid of that feeling I get when I try on clothes that never fit... or take pictures with people and hate what I look like. I want to feel beautiful!!

Thank you for posting this and sharing your journey! I look forward to seeing your progress :)
